Definition and Usage Areas of Caustic Soda Flakes | Exporters, Distributors, Manufacturers, and Suppliers
Caustic soda flakes, also known as pure sodium hydroxide, are colorless and crystalline solids with a melting point of 318°C. They exhibit high solubility in water, lower solubility in ethanol and methanol, but are insoluble in non-polar solvents like ether.
When solid sodium hydroxide is dissolved in water, it undergoes an exothermic reaction that releases a significant amount of heat. This reaction is highly exothermic and can pose safety risks, including the potential for splashing. The resulting solution is typically colorless and odorless, and like other alkaline solutions, it becomes slippery upon contact with the skin.
Sodium hydroxide reacts with protic acids to form water and associated salts. For example, when sodium hydroxide reacts with hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride is produced:
NaOH (aq) + HCl (aq) → NaCl (aq) + H2O (l)
Such neutralization reactions, represented by a net ionic equation, generate heat and are exothermic. They can be utilized in acid-base titrations. However, sodium hydroxide is not commonly used as a primary standard due to its hygroscopic nature and tendency to absorb carbon dioxide from the air.
Caustic soda, a white hygroscopic substance, readily dissolves in water, forming a soft, slippery, and soapy solution. It has a caustic effect on human tissue and finds application in various industries, including chemical manufacturing, artificial silk production, soap and detergent production, paper manufacturing, paint production, and oil refineries. When mixed with water, its temperature can rise to approximately 50 degrees Celsius within 5 minutes and remain hot for about 15 minutes.
Usage Areas of Caustic Soda Flakes:
